INST ALL REPORT : CombiCor ® Direct-Fired Residential Water Heaters When Harold Bruner got a chance to design and install his first radiant floor heating system, he took the time to do it right. Harold is a professional engineer at Michel Sales Company Inc., in St. Paul, Minnesota. Michel Sales represents Bradford White Corporation in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota and the upper peninsula of Michigan. In addition to Bradford White, Michel Sales had just recently taken on the Rehau line of radiant floor heating, and Harold attended their training school. He realized right away that radiant floor heating had a lot of potential in his area, one that i s known for long, cold winters. This type of efficient, comfortable heating system should generate high interest. Harold’s first customer for radiant floor heating was Mike Gusse. Mike was formerly a buyer for J.H. Larson Electric, a Bradford White distributor in the Twin City area. He is, therefore, familiar with Michel Sales. Mike was building a beautiful new home in Zimmerman, Minnesota, and he and his wife Sue wanted the best of radiant living. Their spacious two story home sits on a large rural lot in the northwest outreaches of suburban Minneapolis. The home is heated on all levels with radiant floors. Radiant tubing is placed in concrete on the basement level, and within a poured floor underlayment on all other levels. There is generous use of hardwoods, tile and carpeting throughout. The ceilings are vaulted with an open staircase featured in Case Study: Zimmerman, Minnesota INSTALLER: Harold Burner, Professional Engineer Michel Sales Company Inc., St. Paul, Minnesota www.bradfordwhite.com  Ambler, PA | 800 523 2931

Residential Water Heaters

When Harold Bruner got a chance to

design and install his first radiant floor

heating system, he took the time to do it

right. Harold is a professional engineer atMichel Sales Company Inc., in St. Paul,

Minnesota. Michel Sales represents

Bradford White Corporation in Minnesota,

Wisconsin, North and South Dakota and

the upper peninsula of Michigan. In addition

to Bradford White, Michel Sales had just

recently taken on the Rehau line of radiant

floor heating, and Harold attended their

training school. He realized right awaythat radiant floor heating had a lot of

potential in his area, one that is known for

long, cold winters. This type of efficient,

Harold’s first customer for radiant floor

heating was Mike Gusse. Mike was

formerly a buyer for J.H. Larson Electric,

a Bradford White distributor in the TwinCity area. He is, therefore, familiar with

Michel Sales. Mike was building a beautiful

the main living area. Large windows

open up to a very pleasant woodsy view.

High quality windows and modern

construction in this home allows only

97,000 BTU per hour of heat loss in the

frigid Minnesota winter. With 4,800

square feet of heated floor, the heating

load averages about

20 BTU per square

foot. As an added

feature, the 950

square foot garage

is also heated with

radiant floor. This

feature not only

provides comfort in

the winter, but melts

the snow that falls

from the vehicle and

dries the floor to a

safe walking surface. All the heat for

this large home is provided by a Bradford

White 75 Gallon TTW CombiCor® in

series with a 75 gallon Bradford White

TTW water heater. When the heating

load is within the capability of the

CombiCor unit, both storage vessels are

heated by the CombiCor and the 1TW unit

does not fire. When the heating demand

reaches its extreme load, the 1TW is

staged in automatically without any

add i t ional

controls. In

the heart of

e v e r y

Comb iCor

lies the

U l t r a C o i l

Heat Transfer

System. This

s p e c i a l l y

designed coil

a l l o w s

efficient heat transfer from the potable

water in, the tank to the heating fluid

within the UltraCoil. And because the

UltraCoil is a double-walled heat

exchanger, the use of glycol antifreeze

in the heating system is possible. The

use of glycol provides assurance that the

heating loops, especially those in the

garage, will not contaminate the antifreeze

protected heating fluid with the potable

water system. In the unlikely event of a

leak at the heat exchanger, the fluid

would be vented overboard to the

atmosphere. There is plenty of hot water

for domestic use in this system too. In

fact, if the domestic hot water demand

increases beyond the capability of the

CombiCor, the TTW will automatically

augment the potable water output. This

system provides a nearly endless supply

of efficient hot water. As an added safety

feature, the potable water temperature

output is protected with the adjustable

anti-scald valve that is provided with

every CombiCor. This Bradford White

heating system performed flawlessly

through the coldest part of the winter of

1996/97. Michel sales associate ChrisDeCosse (seen visiting the project) is

excited about promoting the system

directly to developers and to plumbing

and heating contractors throughout their

midwest sales area.

Basic Heating System Diagram requires expansion tank,

pressure relief, and a fill and flush station.
