Talking about the Villa de El Espinar is doing it, among other things, of recogni-tions in the form of awards. Not in vain it is one of the morst awarded tournaments in the Spanish sports scene. This year it has taken the National Prize of Sports, Sta-dium Cup version, a prize awarded by the Superior Council of Sports to those enti-ties which have excelled at their special contribution to promotional and foment of sport tasks. The tournament has also been honored by the Federation of Sport Press of Cas-tilla y León and the Association of Sport Press of Segovia, which have granted it a special award for its twenty five years of history. Besides, the Open Castilla y León has, among others, prestigious prizes as Best Challenger Tournament of the World awar-ded in 2010 by the ATP and ITF, the two most important official tennis organisms in the world.

This tournament also has the Bronze Pla-que of Sports Merit, which in 2006 was also granted by the Superior Council of Sports, prize that allowed the tournament to be part of the Royal Order of Sports Merit of the spanish Royal Household, as well as the Silver Insignia of Tennis Merit of the Royal Spanish Federation of Tennis. About twenty five years ago, a prstigious journalist baptized it with the name it is now known in the national and interna-tional little world of tennis: “the miracle of El Espinar””. Its origins and development have invested it with a distinct character of “social interest event”, having been a pioneer, in those initial years, in suppor-ting wheelchair tennis within the profes-sional tournament itself, as well as base tennis players, with the organization of the cadets championships, at the same time that it allows young players to live and in-teract with the professionals enjoying the same rights.

Which is your valuation of El Espinar daring with a hard court in those years?“The title just shows the space that was being looking for. It is a tournament that I value for what it means, in all senses, at that moment ingenious for the surface, it was the counterpoint of the Godó. It has quite a lot on its surroundings, for the court, placing, achievements, as all the good ones have passed. It is a platform for new values and allows the Spanish to be seen”.

Arseni PérezComentarista de TVE / Comentator of TVE

On the top, the Spanish tennis does not confine itself only to clay courts. Do you think that with a view to a challenger like El Espinar young players are now more multifaceted?“This is the great advantage of the Spanish tennis, it has no comparison with any other present case, perhaps it happens something similar in France. We are envied in all continents, they say it is an incredible case. The case of Spain and this generation makes it very demanding for those coming behind. Even though there can be a step in the way, in the long run we will again have several players on the top. That shows that we are at a good level in the hard court”.Can or must tennis be modernized?“There are always nuances. The problem, in quotation marks, is the television coverage for the time matter, to be able to delimit more the matches. It arose that of the “golden point”, which was always talked about. The great peak comes from it is widely wat-ched, with quality broadcasts and good visibility, as videogames offer a great quality. All the rest goes through the rationalization of the schedule, so that it is not so exhausting; but the dynamics of tennis is so powerful that it is very good today.”.Can you imagine El Espinar with a feminine chart in 2012?“Let’s hope so. With Vivi’s hand, I’m sure this can be achieved sooner or later. If it is for a better tournament, better later than sooner.”.Without Hawk Eye, do you prefer to narrate a live match on a hard court or on a clay court?“If the match is very long and very good, I prefer it. No matter the surface.”.At work, you don’t seem to have a bad time, why it that so?“Because we enjoy what we do, we believe in the product we are offering. Thanks to the protagonists and the tournaments, it is good, and the hours available in TVE can cope with it. As people tell us, they receive it very good. All things considered, we are satisfied. This little corner in the programming of TVE is one of the particular products and the audience seem to un-derstand our message with great affection. And we have good vibrations”.Personally, serving or returning? Narrating or commenting? “Always serving. I like very much attacking. I think it is better to comment, because it allows you to enter the subjectivity, the nuances, to talk. You have to get involved in something”.

Pepo Clavet, from Madrid, is the only one Spanish player, to-gether with the French Rodolphe Gilbert, that has two indivi-dual victories in El Espinar; this is why we are devoting him this express interview.

An obliged question, which memories do you keep from your triumphs in the hard court of El Espinar?“Very fond memories. It was one of the fi rst tournaments I won. Then it was a very familiar tournament and I felt at home”.

Are you surprised that your double remains unprecedented? “Yes, I am, because there were many very good players and

logically someone might have repea-ted”.

What does a challenger like El Espinar really mean for a player? “A great opportunity to keep growing as a player. In fact, many competitors have been fi rst world fi gures later on”.

Why are today’s players more versatile, when it comes to surfaces, but they go up to the net less?“Because the schedule is more distri-buted when it comes to the surfaces and they have to adapt themselves to all of them. They go up less because there are very good returners.”.

Please arrange or distribute them: arms, legs, head or physique, techni-que, psychology.“Head, legs arms or psychology, physique, technique”.

“Nadal is the best in history, it’s a privilege to have coincided with him. Rafa beats me at tennis and I beat him at play station”.

“The signing of Vivi for Segovia’s tournament is a wise move. Her experience within the circuit will be noticeable”.

Among Spanish tennis players there are good vibrations. Feli-ciano and Verdasco are terrifi c”.
