Navegaron por la costa africana hasta alcanzar las Islas Canarias. Desde allí partieron hacia el oeste, con los vientos alisios a favor. Así fue como, después de navegar más de dos meses y debido a la presión, Colón les prometió que si en tres días no avistaban tierra firme regresarían a España. El 12 de octubre de 1492 desembarcaron en la isla Guanahaní (hoy, San Salvador). Pero en lugar de encontrar el Reino del Gran Khan descripto por Marco Polo, rico en oro y especias y con una ciudad imperial de príncipes montados sobre elefantes, Colón se topó con aborígenes desnudos. De todos modos, creyó erróneamente haber llegado a las Indias y fue por eso que llamó indios a sus habitantes. Después de explorar el archipiélago de las Bahamas y Cuba, descubrió otra isla, a la que bautizó La Española (hoy Haití y República Dominicana). Allí, en un lugar de mucho oro, construyó un fuerte con los restos de la carabela Santa María (que había naufragado al estrellarse contra un arrecife). Lo llamó Navidad y fue el primer asentamiento español en el Nuevo Mundo. Después de 72 días de navegación, el 12 de octubre de 1492 el marinero Rodrigo de Triana divisó Tierra. Este acontecimiento cambió la concepción que se tenía del planeta y provocó algo que ni siquiera Colón había imaginado: la unión de dos m u n d o s . Además de los temas oficiales una importante sección del Congreso estará dedicada a las innovaciones en el campo de laterapia y la rehabilitación auditiva.
