Ceremonia de entrega de certificados para nuestros estudiantes más jóvenes

CAMBRIDGE ESOL YLEEl BRITÁNICO organizó la Ceremonia de Entrega de Certificados YLE (Young Learners English Test) de la Universidad de Cambridge del Reino Unido. El evento se realizó el 30 de noviembre, en el Centro de Convenciones Daniel Alcides Carrión, en Miraflores.

Los exámenes YLE tienen contenidos especialmente diseñados para niños de 7 a 12 años, en tres niveles: Starters, Movers y Flyers. Éstos prueban las habilidades reales del idioma inglés en aspectos como comprensión lectora, expresión escrita, comprensión auditiva y expresión oral, y cada participante recibe un certificado que muestra su desempeño.

Felicitamos a cada uno de los alumnos y a los padres de familia por el esfuerzo realizado.

University of Cambridge Andean and Paraguay ESOL Centre Managers meeting

On 1 December, the BRITÁNICO had the pleasure of hosting the Cambridge Andean and Paraguay Centre Managers meeting, which was attended by Centre Managers from all Cambridge authorized centres in Peru as well as representatives from Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Paraguay. The meeting was convened by the University of Cambridge Assessment area and conducted by Mickey Bonin, Assistant Director of Cambridge Business Development and Joanna Raskin, Cambridge Development Manager for the Americas. Cambridge administer the highest quality and most widely recognized ESOL exams in the world, covering a wide range of exams from young learners (YLE) to Lower Main Suite (Key and Preliminary) and Upper Main Suite (First, Advanced and Proficiency). In addition, Cambridge offer TKT - a teaching knowledge exam for teachers - and special exams in the legal, business and finance areas. Cambridge representatives were most impressed by the great interest in obtaining an international language qualification reflected in the remarkable expansion of candidature in the area.

Del 15 al 18 de noviembre, el BRITÁNICO estuvo presente en la Semana Mundial del Emprendimiento 2010, exitoso evento organizado por la Cámara Británica y la Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola.

Este año se abordaron temas de gran interés para los jóvenes emprendedores, como el futuro de los econegocios, desarrollo de software, innovación tecnológica, redes empresariales y emprendimiento social.

My time in the UK… Carmen Rodríguez, San Borja Teacher

It was a damp, rather chilly Peruvian winter morning in July, and there I was at Jorge Chavez airport waiting to board a long flight to London. The prospect of spending such a long time cramped in an airplane jammed between what would probably turn out to be – knowing my luck - the noisiest people on the flight, eating pre-heated meals the size of postage stamps was hardly appealing, yet the reward waiting for me at the end of the journey, the chance to spend an entire month steeped in the culture and language I have been passionately teaching for many years, more than made up for it. Plus – I thought to myself – there might be an interesting film on board.

Although I was wrong about the film, I was not mistaken about how enriching my experience in England would be. Over the course of the following month, the Asociación Cultural Peruano Britanica’s teacher development programme gave me the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study at colleges in both Oxford and Cambridge, England’s most prestigious universities and a dream destination for aspiring students from all over the world. Coached by a number of top experts in the field of EFL, I developed a wide range of skills that have taken my teaching to a new level. I found the Contemporary English workshop particularly useful; by providing updates to current trends in the use of contemporary English – including slang and idioms – it helped tackle what as an EFL teacher abroad I have often seen as one of the hardest challenges: equipping my students with language they can use effectively in day-to-day situations, empowering them so that they can truly interact with a native English speaker in any context or situation.

I would be lying if I said it was all work, no play. As any good student knows, for every hour in class you need at least two out having fun and this was a paradigm I was not going to question! I took in musicals in the West End and museums in the centre of London. I visited all the must-see sights of the British capital and even had time to venture further afield, visiting lesser-known destinations such as Bath, Bristol and Eastbourne, a lovely little town on the south-east coast of England where I learned, much to my surprise, that the sun does actually shine there! I ate fish and chips (overrated), Indian curry and Cornish pasties (basically an empanada), and had a glass of wine in the famous Oxford pub where Clinton DIDN’T inhale cannabis as a student, just smelt it I guess…

I’m back in Lima now, back home. Yet my time in the United Kingdom stays with me, both the formal training and the life experience having made me a better teacher and person.

How the British celebrate traditional and religious holidays

Christmas Day

This articles are two of a series. In subsequent issues we will look at the celebration of other holidays such as Halloween, New Year and Easter.

Boxing Day Boxing Day (26 December) is so-called because it’s a time when tradespeople receive a ‘Christmas Box’ – some money in appreciation of the work they’ve carried out all year.

Traditionally a time for visiting family and friends and indulging in more feasting, Boxing Day is a popular day for football matches and other sporting fixtures.

The day is a public holiday, so shops and banks are closed. More recently, some shops have broken with tradition and now open on Boxing Day to encourage shoppers who can’t wait to spend their Christmas money!

In Britain, Christmas Day is normally spent at home, with the family, and it is regarded as a celebration of the family and its continuity. Preparations start well in advance, with the sending of Christmas cards and installation of a decorated Christmas tree in a prominent place in the home. Although it is now a firmly established tradition, the Christmas tree was first popularised by Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who introduced the custom from his native Germany in 1840.

Some houses are decorated with evergreens (plants which do not lose their leaves in Winter); a wreath of holly on the front door and garlands of holly, ivy and fir indoors. Bunches of mistletoe are often hung above doorways – any couple passing underneath must exchange kisses! Traditional food is prepared: sweet mince pies, a rich Christmas cake and Christmas pudding. Everyone has their own favourite récipe, but they’re all packed full of spices, nuts, dried fruit and brandy.

Presents are bought and wrapped, and traditionally placed under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. Christmas is both a secular

and a religious holiday, and many families like to attend a midnight service at church on Christmas Eve, or celebrate Christmas in church on Christmas morning.

The excitement begins for children on Christmas Eve, when they hang up their stockings (an old sock or, more ambitiously, pillow cases) around the fireplace or at the foot of the bed for Father Christmas to fill with presents. The English Father Christmas or Santa Claus is first recorded in his traditional red and white outfit in a woodcut of 1653, but the storyof Santa arriving in his reindeer-drawn sleigh and descending down the chimney to fill children’s stockings with presents derives from the USA.

Practically everyone sits down to a Christmas dinner in the early afternoon of Christmas Day, traditionally roast turkey, but some families prefer goose or roast beef. The turkey is followed by the Christmas pudding, brought to the table flaming hot. Brandy is poured over the pudding, then lit. The day ends with everyone relaxing, watching television or playing guessing games like charades.

Elvira Guzmán, Encargada de Actividades Extracurriculares

Motivados por la cercanía de las fiestas -una ocasión precisa para dejar fluir toda nuestra creatividad-, continuamos con nuestra campaña navideña ofreciendo a nuestros alumnos diversos talleres cuya ejecución se convirtió en toda una celebración debido a su alegría y entusiasmo.

En nuestro recorrido por los centros, visitamos el BRITÁNICO Lima, donde los alumnos hicieron gala de su creatividad al pintar una caja portavino, aplicarle pátina para producir un efecto madera y decorarla con festivas cintas, obteniendo atractivos resultados. Luego estuvimos en el BRITÁNICO Camacho para ofrecer un taller de pintura en trupán, en el que los estudiantes, cuya participación fue impresionante por su asistencia y desempeño, aprendieron fácilmente a crear textura, pintar y decorar un gracioso colgador para puerta. En el BRITÁNICO Pueblo Libre, los alumnos, con mucha dedicación, pintaron una caja de uso múltiple y la decoraron con un colorido muñeco de tela, creando así un fino producto que los animó vivamente. Más adelante, en el BRITÁNICO Los Jardines, los alumnos asistieron con mucha ilusión al taller de pintura y découpage, en el que pintaron y decoraron un portallaves de pared con motivos alusivos a estas fiestas, logrando un producto de calidad. Y para decorar y deleitarse en la mesa de Nochebuena, en el BRITÁNICO San Isidro aprendimos la preparación de un leño navideño, a partir de un pionono de chocolate relleno de mermelada, crema chantilly, cerezas, etc., que satisfizo el exigente paladar de los estudiantes.

Podemos decir que ya estamos listos para recibir las fiestas de diciembre, pues las técnicas enseñadas en los diferentes talleres son fáciles de aprender y nos invitan a practicarlas, crear y compartir con nuestras familias y amistades. ¡Tengan ustedes una Feliz Navidad!

Guy Fawkes Day Celebration in Monterrico Selma Sotomayor, Monterrico Teacher

Remember, remember the fifth of November,Gunpowder treason and plotWe see no reason Why gunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot

This is the first stanza of a poem dedicated to Guy Fawkes, one of the conspirators who attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London the 5th of November of 1605. He was arrested and hanged. As part of our cultural awareness, my group of advance 6 prepared a project about this British celebration.

The first day of classes we discussed the content and scope of the project. Students came up with ideas for presenting it, such as brochures, interviews, illustrations, videos, pamphlets etc. The following days the students gathered in groups and moved out of the classroom to perform the tasks they had planned, conducting interviews, making recordings or printing visual material. Their work was monitored every day ten minutes before the class finished. However, I could not imagine the extent to which they had been involved in it.

The results exceeded my expectations; the day of the presentation I was really impressed. The students decorated the room as if it were bonfire night, including a Guy! A DVD was recorded with the interviews they had carried out answering some common questions about the celebration, the notice board was completely covered with pictures of traditional dishes, firework displays and bonfires. What is more, a colourful and well designed brochure with useful information about the story of the celebration of Guy Fawkes’ night was handed out.

For a while we could feel the excitement of this traditional English commemoration.

This fact together with my students’ sense of achievement and their joy at finishing the advanced level made me join their happiness. My best wishes to them.

Last month, for the lesson about Health Problems, my juniors 10 students were asked to search for information on how to treat and prevent some diseases such as polio or cholera which they later shared in class through PowerPoint presentations.

It was satisfying to see how committed, interested and full of enthusiasm my students were to preparing their work, asking me questions to clarify their worries prior to the presentation day. Students had the opportunity to run-through the language and vocabulary they had learned over the cycle while giving information about symptoms and treatments according to the topic they had chosen.

Thanks to all my students who dynamically participated in this project; without your commitment the objective wouldn’t have been fulfilled.

Our Planet in Danger! Ella Tenorio, San Borja Teacher

In today’s world it has become a must to use all the tools we can to prevent and to inform about the issues our planet faces and the way to solve part of them.

As EFL teachers, we have a responsibility towards our students and their development not only as fluent speakers of the target language but as proactive citizens of the world. How do we combine these ideas efficiently? By using projects based on the topics from our books, from Kids to the Advanced level.

Our students are eager to talk, even more if it matters, so the experience will be memorable and meaningful. In the words of my Adv 3students, “The project was exciting, informative and fun. It was really great … to save the world is possible!” What more can we ask for?

It is always said that talking about films is considered to be an enjoyable and appealing way of expressing our opinions and preferences and, why not, meeting new people as well.

This time my enthusiastic students of J11 found the best way to convey their tastes in films by working eagerly on a challenging project which gave them the opportunity to put into practice everything they have learned about this topic as well as using their creativity and imagination to make really attractive collages of some of the most popular films ever seen.I was very glad to see the boys and the girls sharing ideas and materials and to observe how well they get on with each other when working as a team. I hope I succeeded in making this project a truly memorable experience for them.

Many thanks to my students for their willingness to work hard and give their energy and time to this project and to the BRITÁNICO for giving me the chance of making my students feel they are learning the language.

Open Day in Pueblo Libre Sara Chavieri, Profesora de Pueblo Libre

El día sábado 23 de octubre se llevó a cabo un Open Day para los niños de Infants 7 en el BRITÁNICO Pueblo Libre. Ese día fue especial tanto para los padres de familia como para los niños. Los padres de familia observaron muy atentamente cómo se desenvuelve su niño en el salón de clase y cómo se inicia en el idioma inglés. También pudieron conocer la manera en la cual se expone el idioma a su hijo por medio del material didáctico, juegos, canciones, concursos y el cuentacuentos (actividad favorita de los niños); todo para lograr el ambiente perfecto para que los niños puedan aprender. El nivel de atención y motivación de los niños fue tal que hasta los padres se vieron envueltos en una amena actividad en la cual tuvieron que ayudar a su hijo a armar un rompecabezas de Cheeky Monkey, el cual forma parte del material didáctico del BRITÁNICO.

Al final de la clase, los padres pudieron comprobar que su hijo está en el ambiente más adecuado para aprender el idioma. Además, al verse involucrados en el aprendizaje de su niño se comprometieron aún más a motivarlo y acompañarlo en sus actividades para la casa. Por tal motivo, no queda más que agradecer a los padres por la confianza depositada en nosotros y por asistir a este Open Day creado para que compartan las experiencias de su hijo.
