HOW BARCODES ARE
READ?
Barcodes are read by
sweeping a small spot of

TERMINOLOGY
BAR- The darker, non reflective element of a
Bar Code
SPACE-The lighter, reflective element of a Bar Code
INTER-CHARACTER GAP-The space between the bars or spaces
STARTCHARACTER-A special pattern of bars and spaces used to
identify the beginning of a Bar Code symbol
STOP CHARACTER-A special pattern of bars and spaces used to
identify the end of a Bar Code symbol
CHECK DIGIT- A calculated character included within the Bar Code
for error detection

SYMBOLOGY: AN
EASY DEFINITION
Symbology is considered a language in barcode
technology. The actual technique of encoding the
bars and spaces a number of technical
specifications or characteristics define and
separate one symbology from another.

CODE 39(1)
Code 39 (also known as 3 of
9 bar code) is a barcode
symbology that can encodeletters (A through Z), digits
(0 through 9) and a handful
of special characters like
the % sign.

INTERLEAVED 2 OF 5
Each data character is
composed of 5 elementseither 5 bars or 5 spaces
Bars and spaces have 2
widths
Of the 5 elements ,2 are
wide and 3 are narrow

CODE128
Bars and spaces have 4
different widths(4-level code)
Code 128 is very compact and
results in a dense symbol

HOW DO SCANNERSWORK?
-
8/8/2019 barcode presentation11
17/22
FIXED SCANNERS
Fixed scanners remain attached to their host
computer and transmit one data item at a
time as the barcode is scanned
-

18/22
PORTABLE BATCH
SCANNERS
Portable batch scanners are hand-heldbattery operated readers which store data in
memory for uploading to the host at a
different time

WIRELESS PORTABLE
SCANNERS
When you need to collect information at a
remote location, and need the information
immediately, a wireless solution is the
perfect one
