ABOUT USTo know the Brandenburg is to go back in time, but to view it through a modern lens. It’s to revel in the music of the well-known and explore that of the less-known. To respect the instruments of the period while celebrating the artists of today. And to sample the world’s virtuosos as you journey with the country’s biggest baroque stars.
It’s to always bring something new to the old. To create music that strikes a balance between excellence and risk-taking, art and entertainment, joy and quality. And to feel you’re a part of the energy and passion of every performance. Above all, it’s to put your faith in an Artistic Director who will take you to the soaring heights of the extraordinary and bring you back down to earth with a playful wink.
Under the charismatic leadership of Artistic Director and Co-founder Paul Dyer, we feature leading specialists in informed performance practice from around Australia. From our very first concert in the Sydney Opera House to a sold-out London BBC Proms performance that had ‘everyone roaring for more’, we continue to achieve artistic excellence at the highest level. A member of the Australia Council’s Major Performing Arts Panel, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra has become a leader in Australia’s cultural landscape.
The Orchestra’s name pays tribute to the Brandenburg Concertos of J.S. Bach, whose musical genius was central to the Baroque era. Our concerts include both the music of well-known composers such as Mozart, Vivaldi and Handel, as well as lesser-known composers, rare works and unusual instruments.
Each year we invite some of the most spectacular artists working on the international stage today to help us bring to life the music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Guest artists from around the globe have shared the Brandenburg stage, from South America, Portugal, Italy, Germany, the USA, France, Canada, Russia, the UK, Switzerland and Japan, to name a few.
Through our annual subscription series in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, we perform before a live audience of almost 54,000 people, and reach hundreds of thousands more through national broadcasts on ABC Classic FM. The Brandenburg also has a regular commitment to performing in regional Australia.
The Brandenburg’s 20 recordings with ABC Classics include five ARIA Award winners for Best Classical Album (1998, 2001, 2005, 2009 and 2010). In 2015 the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra was the recipient of the Sidney Myer Performing Arts Group Award and in 2016 the Helpmann Award for Best Chamber Concert.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra is a continuously innovative company, dedicated to excellence and well known for providing deeply engaging experiences that are something much more than just a shared passion between the musicians and the audiences to whom they perform. This orchestra is also recognised for challenging preconceptions of early
music and the 2016 season-opening concert series, Recorder Revolutionary, certainly did that. With not just one but a multitude of recorders, guest director Maurice Steger demonstrated with rapid-fire virtuosity that this much maligned primary school instrument is, in its original form, one of the most colourful and engaging instruments that we know.
Another highlight of the season followed: Mozart’s Requiem: 100 Voices, featuring the renowned Brandenburg Choir with the addition of Brandenburg Young Voices – school children aged between 8 and 17. This series was a new milestone in the company’s achievements not only for its artistic success and the record number of performers on stage – over 150 – but also its record single ticket sales.
As always, the annual Brandenburg season featured many of the greatest exponents of baroque and early classical music from Australia and around the world. A total of six subscription series were presented in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane during 2016, along with regional and community performances and private recitals. With the addition of a number of new fundraising events it was a full year of activity for the company.
Revenue for 2016 totalled $7 million reflecting ticket sales of $3.7 million and annual philanthropic and corporate support of $2.2 million, a 6% increase on the previous year. Administration expenses decreased by 21% due to non-recurring investment items and a focus on cost reduction. Total expenses were $7.06m and consequently the company ended 2016 with a small operating deficit.
The company is strongly focused on the key priorities of its current five-year strategic plan that commenced in 2016. Included on the agenda for each Board meeting is the
presentation of a key strategic topic. Emphasis on growing the philanthropic and corporate support base continues with the establishment of new programs such as the Brandenburg Orchestral Chairs and the ongoing Chairman’s 11 which supports our international and local soloists. During 2016 we welcomed artists from Switzerland, The Netherlands, Austria, USA, Israel, New Zealand, as well as soloists from within the Orchestra.
Two new directors joined the Board during 2016: Alison Harrop, Chief Financial Officer, DEXUS Property Group; and Aidan Allen, Managing Director, Head of Advisory, Citi ANZ. Melinda Conrad resigned from the Board after serving for almost nine years and we thank her for her long and valuable contribution to the company.
I commend my fellow directors for their support and time commitment throughout the year including their important contribution to the standing Board committees on which they serve. These groups steer policy and strategy in the areas of finance and risk management, development, government relations, and a national centre for baroque excellence. Artistic Director, Paul Dyer and Managing Director, Bruce Applebaum continue to lead the artistic and administrative operations with vision and diligence.
A dedicated chorus of concertgoers, donors, foundations and corporate partners support our mission and we are grateful to them for helping to spread the word about the outstanding work that goes on every day, both on and off the stage. I also acknowledge the support of the Major Performing Arts Panel of the Australia Council and the arts department of the NSW Government, Create NSW.
I know I speak for the full Board of Directors when I thank the entire Brandenburg team – musicians, management team and administrative staff – for their dedication to sustaining the incomparable artistry for which this company is nationally and internationally renowned.

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S REPORT
In 2016, we took time to reflect on our direction as a company, in particular on our brand and its alignment to our strategic plan and our role as Australia’s national baroque orchestra. From this, we can continue to strengthen the value of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra in a competitive and evolving arts marketplace.
What we do know is that baroque music has to be experienced, rather than explained. And that our performances continue to have a transformative power; a raw energy and genuineness that draws people in and helps them feel connected – to the music, the composers, the artists on stage, the concertgoers around them, and to themselves.
Such themes played out throughout the 2016 season from Recorder Revolutionary, with one of the most virtuosic musicians we have ever presented, the Swiss recorder player, Maurice Steger. Maurice had enormous audience appeal, his flamboyant physical presence contrasting with the diminutive recorders he played. In Mozart Requiem: 100 Voices, Paul Dyer’s commitment to young artists took on a new significance with the inclusion of the Brandenburg Young Voices, a choir of up to 100 young people from schools across Sydney and Melbourne. Singing alongside the extraordinary Brandenburg Choir the children were completely captivating. Our third series, Blazing Baroque, put to the forefront members of the Orchestra with all their expertise, passion and personality, and audiences celebrated fine performances from our own soloists.
In a year of generous applause some of the most enthusiastic was for one of the most exceptional violin virtuosos to have performed with the Brandenburg, and certainly one of the gutsiest: Shunske Sato. The admiration our musicians had for this extraordinarily talented young man was evident as he led them into the nineteenth century before stunning everyone with his breathtaking performance of the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 4, rarely heard on gut strings.
For series five we welcomed back to Australia the brilliant mandolin player Avi Avital. Our first cable television broadcast, through our new partnership with Foxtel Arts Channel in 2016, featured Avi’s inaugural concert with us in 2014. Our second broadcast was our 2016 Noël! Noël! Christmas concert recorded at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Paddington, Sydney.
During the 2016 season the Brandenburg presented a total of 78 concerts to an audience of almost 54,000. The continuing loyalty of our subscribers is demonstrated through an industry-leading renewal rate of 86% and it was also gratifying to see single ticket sales grow by 14% across the core concert series. In particular, audience growth in Brisbane since we started regular touring there in 2015 has been very pleasing.
An increase in fundraising activities also kept the company very busy throughout the past year and included our inaugural Melbourne gala dinner with Lady Primrose Potter AC as its patron. Like our Sydney Spring Dinner at Government House, now in its 20th year, we look forward to this Melbourne dinner becoming part of our annual calendar.
I would like to thank the Chairman of the Board and the directors who continue to provide support in so many ways including philanthropy, business expertise and wise counsel. I am grateful to Macquarie Group for serving as Principal Partner and leading a group of committed corporate sponsors. We are also appreciative of the funding support provided by the Federal government, through the Australia Council, and the New South Wales government.
The commitment of the Brandenburg “family” – musicians, donors, concertgoers and staff – continues to make the difference in our ability to achieve our artistic and financial goals. The generosity of all our supporters underpins our success in presenting programs of the highest artistic quality, and we are most appreciative of their support in enabling us to take the steps – and occasional leaps – that we do.
Paul, his musical colleagues, and I are very fortunate to have the support of a dedicated and high calibre team off stage. A strong culture exists within the company through an absolute commitment to and love of the music, and we are very proud of the enormous amount we achieve every year.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra’s 2016 artistic season began with Swiss recorder player, Maurice Steger. Crowned with international awards for his many CD recordings and concerts, this recorder virtuoso and conductor plays with technical brilliance and joy. Our expectations of this small instrument of the old centuries go out the window when Maurice breathes life into baroque music from the enormous array of small recorders that he plays.
Australia has a deep connection with this tiny instrument. One of the world’s great recorder makers, Fred Morgan from Daylesford, Victoria produced the finest handcrafted instruments in the world. For this program I chose some rarely heard composers such as Gallo, Fiorenza and Rittler, alongside super virtuosic recorder pieces from Vivaldi, Geminiani and Telemann that captured Maurice’s superb musicianship. With a well-deserved reputation as a revolutionary, Maurice is an artist, a leader and a wonderful mentor for young musicians throughout the world. Audiences rose to their feet in sheer surprise at his musical acrobatics. The Orchestra provided a perfect accompaniment role and when they took centre stage they explored traditional music with brilliance and daring.
Mozart’s Requiem is at the core of Brandenburg repertoire. The poetry of the Requiem acknowledges the human soul with amazing respect and the music is poignant and powerful. For Series 2 Mozart Requiem: 100 Voices, I chose to engage four young solo singers, each of whom have a long association as choristers within the ranks of the Brandenburg Choir: Amy Moore (soprano), Max Riebl (alto), Paul Sutton (tenor) and Alexander Knight (bass). Five unusual instruments are required for this score: two basset horns and three period trombones alongside the regular period instruments of Mozart’s time. The result was some of the finest orchestral playing heard in this country as the Orchestra thoughtfully balanced the very personal elements of a requiem.
As part of our ongoing commitment to youth we were proud to present one hundred young voices in both Sydney and Melbourne during this series. In Sydney sixteen schools were represented and I chose one of our leading sopranos from the Brandenburg Choir, Anna Sandström, to train and conduct the Brandenburg Young Voices. In Melbourne
the young group comprised voices from a number of organisations and school choirs conducted by Philip Carmody, Director of Music, Melbourne Grammar School. These young male and female voices performed both alone and alongside the Brandenburg Choir providing a vocal blend and an astonishing technical virtuosity for such young people. My aim was to both train and invigorate these young minds in all aspects of period performance and give them an opportunity to perform alongside one of the finest orchestras and choirs in the country.
Series 3 was a rare concert series where the Brandenburg musicians and I were able to enjoy the stage all by ourselves with no international guest artist or Brandenburg Choir. Throughout the program Shaun Lee-Chen performed some of the most extreme high register virtuosic violin playing from works by Vivaldi and Fasch – not for the faint-hearted. Assembling some of the senior members of the Orchestra – Melissa Farrow and Mikaela Oberg on baroque flute and recorder, as well as Emma Black and Kirsten Barry on baroque oboe – these four women illuminated our rehearsals and performances with cleverness, spontaneity, brilliance and determination. The musicians on stage provided a solid musical base to allow the soloists to show off their unique styles. Not surprisingly the audience reaction to this series with its local stars was enormously enthusiastic.
The Brandenburg has specialised in following a natural path from the renaissance period through baroque to classical and beyond. We have a very strong understanding of the stylistic and technical vocabulary of each of these periods and this has previously enabled a natural flow into the nineteenth century Romantic period. For Series 4, Sato and the Romantics, we peered around this corner once more, allowing the musicians to explore, collaborate and enjoy the different demands of Paganini, Grieg and Mendelssohn. For the first time in Brandenburg history we had the special opportunity to play one of the most difficult pieces ever written for the violin, Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 4. One of the bravest musicians I have come across, Shunske Sato, took on a role that required not only technical virtuosity but emotional depth and a keen eye for nineteenth century performance practice. He delivered an unforgettable performance on every stage every night and I am especially excited that we were able to take a live recording of the final Sydney concert for CD release in 2017.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT CONTINUED
International Grammy-award nominated superstar of the mandolin Avi Avital from Israel, returned for Series 5 after his stunning debut with the Brandenburg in 2014. In addition to its folkloric origins Avi has been able to reposition the mandolin as an instrument worthy of frontline status on the classical stage, and Avi and I jointly designed a program spotlighting the mandolin in well-known baroque pieces written for other instruments. This series was characterised by innovation, passion and engagement as we performed the music of Valentini, Tsintsadze, Paisiello and Vivaldi. Avi’s boundless energy and powerful engagement with both the orchestra and audience were tangible. This is one of the explosive artists of our generation and, along with the Orchestra’s brilliance, audiences at every performance were unrestrained in their enthusiasm.
As one of our most distinctive concert series every year, the Christmas Noël! Noël! program combines an ensemble from the Orchestra with the Brandenburg Choir and typically features a young vocal soloist. For our eighteenth Noël! Noël! series Madison Nonoa, a gorgeous young soprano from New Zealand who is at the very start of her career, made her debut in Australia and she easily charmed our audiences. A member of the Brandenburg’s artistic team, young composer and music librarian, Alex Palmer, provided an outstanding series of arrangements taking old manuscripts and carols and giving them a modern flavour.
The music in Noël! Noël! ranged from the fifteenth century to the present day. With a commitment to contemporary vocal choral music, the Brandenburg Choir explored two interesting European composers, Ola Gjeilo and Ēriks Ešenvalds, and vocally demanding for the Choir was the unaccompanied Jim Clements arrangement of the American singer/songwriter Ben Folds song, ‘The Luckiest’.
As well as the core season concerts, various small groups from the Orchestra and Choir performed in a range of concerts and recitals across Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and regional NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Many of these involved the musicians themselves devising the programs and researching repertoire, and I am grateful for the wonderful collaborative spirit between the Brandenburg musicians and our artistic and operations teams to bring all of our concerts together.
Thank you to Bruce Applebaum, the administration team and everyone who supports what we do to bring you the music that we love so much. Long live the rare sounds of the baroque!

In the ensemble’s rendition of the Ciaccona a 7 in C by Philipp Jakob Rittler, the continuo section’s jazz-like opening laid down a funky rhythmic groove that increased in pace and textural complexity before gradually subsiding back to the original continuo opening. “The Orchestra breathed and pulsated as one and Lee- Chen interrupted the polite musical conversation and took over dominating the conversation in between musical flurries and skirmishes. The Recitativo: Grave began as a conversation between Dyer on keyboard and Lee-Chen, the violin singing languorously in a soulful delicate and passionate duet, that develops into a full discussion with the orchestra. The third movement another Allegro featured another extremely difficult and blisteringly fast solo for Lee Chen, the violin almost birdlike with its astonishing swoops and swirls.(The audience went crazy at the end ).” News Local
“The duet work of flautist Melissa Farrow and Michaela Oberg’s recorder in Telemann’s E minor double concerto provided this concert’s high point; their shapely phrasing, down to mutually agreed breathing points, exemplary in both largo and fast movements. Also impressive was the dynamic equity of the partnership, vital in a score like this with so much dovetailing, imitation and stretches of parallel 3rds. In fact, the performance kept on getting better…it would be worth listening to the broadcast, most particularly for this excellent, piercingly fine-spun reading.“ O’Connell The Music

BRANDENBURG DONORSANNUAL GIVING DONORSEach year we must raise over one million dollars in donations to maintain the breadth and quality of our work. We rely on our audiences to respond to our annual donation campaigns, support our planned giving program and attend our fundraising events.
