Divine Mercy Sunday This weekend we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This feast has deeper meaning for those who par cipated in World Youth Day. For me it was an immense blessing to visit the original Divine Mercy sites in Krakow and to listen to Pope Francis words to young people. Regarding Divine Mercy Sunday Pope Francis offers this reflec on: In today's Gospel, the Apostle Thomas personally experiences this mercy of God. ... Thomas does not believe it when the other Apostles tell him: "We have seen the Lord.”... And how does Jesus react? With pa ence: Jesus does not abandon Thomas in his stubborn unbelief ... He does not close the door, He waits. And Thomas acknowledges his own poverty, his li le faith. "My Lord and my God!": with this simple yet faith-filled invoca on, he responds to Jesus' pa ence. He lets himself be enveloped by Divine Mercy; he sees it before his eyes, in the wounds of Christ's hands and

feet and in His open side, and he discovers trust. Genera ons of Faith Please every effort to a end the final Genera ons of Faith this Wednesday. The GOF Design Team has good ac vi es lined up for intergenera on learning. For my part I will sum up for adults what we have studied this past year – how the Creed makes us and gives us a vision very different from the dominant culture. We will see this in context of our final ar cle of faith: I believe in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. Don’t miss it! Come at 5:45 for dinner and ac vity for all. It’s wonderful to see our children and families learning together. If you wish to a end only the adult presenta on, come to the church at 7 pm. It lasts one hour including Eucharis c Adora on and Intercession during the final 10 or 15 minutes. Annual Catholic Appeal Kick-Off This weekend we kick off the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). The Appeal enables us to focus on all the good that is being done in our Archdiocese: the homeless are sheltered; re red priests and nuns are cared for; our seminarians are prepared for future ministry, and so much more. Great things are being accomplished in the name of Jesus! And each year at this me, we are called to renew our efforts to ensure a Future Full of Hope by giving to the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Campaign! Results of 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal Last week we brought the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal to a close. I am deeply grateful for your support of Archbishop Sartain as he guides the work of Catholic Church in Western Washington. Households throughout Western Washington donated a total of $14,976,320. Here at St. Mary of the Valley 182 families gave $51,226.42. Remember the Archdiocese is not “them”; you and I are the Archdiocese. 2017 ACA Goal Next Sunday I will announce our 2017 goal. The goal for each parish is determined by “ordinary income” that is the dona ons given by parishioners in the weekend collec on and Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) to the parish. It does not include moneys given to capital improvements, s pends for funerals and sacrament services, special collec ons, etc. Our ordinary income did increase in the past fiscal year which is great news. It also means that we have a corresponding responsibility. Next Sunday we will have a special presenta on on what the Annual Catholic Appeals means for us. Take the Plunge In my homily this weekend I am invi ng you to “take the plunge” into God’s Mercy and his Word. Please see the enclosed flier for full informa on how you can par cipate. Remember the saying, “"A lamb can bathe in it without drowning - and an elephant can swim in it."

Generations of Faith 2016-2017

Generations of Faith is St. Mary’s “all generation” religious education. Please join us to share a free family meal followed by our theme of the year, The Creed and Professing our

Faith catechesis. 2016-2017 Sessions

4/26/17

Child care available at all sessions.

Orange registration forms are available in the north

vestibule for the 2016-2017 school year. Please complete one form for your whole family.

Liturgy of the Word for Children Children’s Liturgy is actually the Liturgy of the Word for children. There is no preregistration

required. We cover the Gospel of the day at a level the children can understand and enjoy. We enrich

this with discussion, prayers, songs and plays. We also try to raise awareness of God’s love, the humanity of Jesus, the Seasons of the Church, the

understanding of symbols in the Mass and the context of the Bible. Our aim is to make the children’s experience of

church meaningful, whilst helping them to grow in the faith of the Catholic Church and develop as full and active members of our

Parish Community. During the 9:30 am Mass and before the Liturgy of the Word, Father Bloom invites children up to the sanctuary. The children will receive a blessing from Father and then process to their classroom. After Children’s Liturgy, the children will process to the main vestibule and quietly return to their families. Note: At least two

students will be chosen to bring up the gifts. Thank you for your continued prayers and support during this ministry; It is a blessing to

watch these little disciples grow in their faith while lifting up Jesus and loving others.

Read: John 20:19-31 Gospel Summary Following Jesus’ crucifixion the disciples were still uncertain of his message. They lost hope and in fear locked themselves in a room. Without entering through the door, Jesus appeared before them with a greeting of peace and a mission to spread the Good News. The disciple, Thomas, was not in the room. When he learned of Jesus’ visit, he would not believe it. But about week later, Jesus appeared in a similar way when Thomas was with the others. Jesus invited Thomas to touch the wounds in his hands and side. Thomas knew immediately that it was Jesus and believed in him. Reflection for Families Parents are often the source of hope and encouragement for their children. When a child falls repeatedly while learning to walk or ride a bike, it is a parent who coaxes, encourages and praises the child. Parents provide hope and comfort when a child falls short of a goal in academics, relationships, sports, or whatever. Parents can relate to the role of Jesus with his disciples. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Using the newspaper, news broadcasts, or situations you know about, share ideas about people in the world or in your community who might be discouraged. Suggest ways either in prayer or by action that your family might bring hope to these (or some) people.

Divine Mercy and Pro-life Pope Saint John Paul II declared the Sunday after Easter to be Divine Mercy

Sunday. Many of the faithful pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy regularly. There is a link between this devotion and the pro-life movement. Fr. Seraphim Michalenko,

MIC, who was a principal translator of St. Faustina's diary, and the postulator of her cause of canonization, writes the following: "On at least three occasions, from 8:00-11:00 in the evening, she felt like her insides were being torn apart. She suffered so much that she thought she was going to die. The doctors couldn't figure out

what was ailing her, and no medication was able to alleviate her sufferings. Later, she was given to understand that she was undergoing those pains for mothers

who were aborting their children (Diary, 1276). "On another occasion, she had a vision of an angel coming with thunderbolts to destroy one of the most beautiful cities of her country. And she felt powerless to do anything about it (Diary, 474).

What antidote did the Lord give her? The Chaplet of Divine Mercy. [She explained] that the city was to be chastised for its sins, primarily the sin of abortion."

("Wombs of Mercy," Marian Helpers Bulletin, Summer 1995, p.13).

This year Cathy Lenac and Cathy Or z, parishioners of St. Mary’s, have graciously agreed to Co-Chair this event which will be held May 20th in the Parish Hall. There will only be room this year for 112 guests and the ckets will be $40 per person or $75 per couple. The planning has started with many volunteers from St. Mary’s and we are so thankful for the opportunity to raise funding to feed and care for God’s sheep! This event promises a fun-filled evening and the opportunity to bid on, and take home, some very fine items. Get your ckets early to guarantee your spot! You can pay for ckets by check, cash, EFT, or credit card! Call the Parish Office to purchase now! Speaking of fine items, we are looking for newly purchased items that will fetch a high dollar for a very worthy cause. Need and Idea of where to go? You can go to local merchants for dona ons! For more informa on please call Cathy Lenac at 360-794-8945 or call or email Cathy Or z at 425-308-0607 or coo5@fron er.com. Donated items are tax deduc ble! There is so much more to tell you about this upcoming event so stay tuned for more informa on next month…we just wanted to get this lovely evening on your calendar!
