RELIGIOUS AFFAIRSCAMINOS OF EMOTION

Easter Week in Baena, declared as being of national touristic interest, is synonymous with the crowds of Coliblanco and Colinegro Jews and their extraordinary drums played incessantly throughout the festival, processions and re-enactments, and the typical biblical �gures.

The �gure of the brother Jew is one of the most unique and striking features of Baena's Easter Week. The symbol of the Jews and their attire is rooted so deeply that it has left its own mark on di�erent brotherhoods, which are divided by colour, white (Cola Blanca) and black (Cola Negra) in accordance with the colour of the horse hair coming from the Jews' helmets.

During LENT, Baena is known for its misereres, which date back to the 18th century, as well as many other liturgical events. Among the numerous religious festivals that take place in Baena throughout the year, the Eve of Saint Joseph processions on 18th and 19th March are noteworthy.

In May, Baena is �lled with colour for the EXALTATION OF THE CROSS, and again on 16th July for the OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL FIESTA, when the streets of the Almedina area are carpeted with painted sawdust and decorated with �ower pots, plants and Manila shawls.

HERITAGECAMINOS OF CULTURE

Baena’s cultural heritage ranges from its important archaeological remains (with those at TORREPAREDONES being the most signi�cant), some of which date back 3,500 years, to its rich heritage of both civil and religious architecture.

The city’s religious architecture features a number of important churches, such as SANTA MARÍA LA MAYOR and the CONVENTUAL DE MADRE DE DIOS.

The PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN forms the heart of the city, combining Baroque buildings, such as the CASA DEL MONTE,

with modern buildings such as the TOWN HALL. The most traditional area of the city is LA ALMEDINA which was originally Moorish, and which features the remains of the CASTLE and two of the city’s most representative symbols: the copy of the IBERIAN LION (León Ibérico) and the “CRISMÓN DE BAENA”, a Visigoth cross. A stroll around this beautiful city is completed by enjoying its arches (CONSOLACIÓN AND OSCURO), which are remains of the ancient Moorish wall and its HISTORIC HOUSES.

GASTRONOMYCAMINOS OF THE SENSES

The outstanding feature of local cuisine is the world-famous local EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL, which carries its own Baena denomination of origin (the oldest in Spain).

Baena's recipes employ traditional ingredients found in most Andalusian dishes. Many households use typical ingredients such as high-quality PORK PRODUCTS and CHEESES, and prepare traditional dishes like CARNERETE (a potato-based dish), and REVOLTILLO BAENENSE (scrambled eggs with locally grown vegetables, etc.). All of these dishes can be complemented with any of the WINES produced in the town, which boast the Montilla-Moriles designation of origin.

The LOCALLY MADE CAKES and NATURAL LIQUEURS produced in the area are also popular.

FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONSCAMINOS OF TRADITION

On the day of the VIRGEN BLANCA DE LA ALEGRÍA PROCESSION (the second Sunday in June) the people taking part in the procession (romeros) and horse riders gather together amidst dancing and the singing of traditional songs.

In the �rst week in October, the FERIA REAL FAIR is preceded by the COFRADE TAPAS AND WINE TASTING FAIR. In November, THE OLIVE AND OLIVE OIL FAIR o�ers a wide range of activities related to this liquid gold, highlighting the RUTA DE LA TAPA ORO VIRGEN, an olive-oil themed tapas route.

ARTS & CRAFTSCAMINOS OF AUTHENTICITY

A whole range of workshops have developed from the city’s Easter celebrations which keep ancient traditions alive and produce extraordinary quality JEWISH COSTUMES AND ELABORATE HELMETS, as well as special DRUMS used during the celebrations.

Other local arts and crafts which are not so directly related with Easter include POTTERY, SADDLE MAKING, METALWORKING and WOODWORKING, using highly artistic manual production processes.

NATURE AND LANDSCAPESCAMINOS OF NATURE

The history of Baena mirrors that of the river Guadajoz, caressing the town itself with the waters of its tributary, the Marbella. The speci�c nature of Baena’s waterways and terrain has led to the emergence of a truly unique landscape. Take, for example, the CUEVA DEL YESO (GYPSUM CAVE), 8 kilometres from Baena. This 2,562.7 metre-deep cavern is the largest cave complex in the province of Cordoba, and provides the habitat for �ve di�erent types of bats and several freshwater prawn species not found anywhere else in the world.

Other spots, like LAGUNAS DE LA QUINTA and EL RINCÓN DEL MUERTO, both of which are included in the Andalusian Wetlands Plan, are resources of great ecological value as resting, feeding and breeding sites for migratory birds such as grey herons and �amingos.

The EMBALSE DE VADOMOJÓN is one of the most important reservoirs in the Guadalquivir basin, and its opening contributed much to the development of water sports and �shing activity in the region.

Baena’s natural wonders also include the VÍA VERDE GUADAJOZ-SUBBÉTICA (GUADAJOZ-SUBBETICA HIKING PATH) that follows the old railway line from Baena itself to the old train station and can be enjoyed on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

Baena's history stretches back over more than a thousand years, reaching its height after the turn of the 8th century, when many from surrounding settlements left the Iberian and Roman nucleus, Iponuba, three kilometres from Baena to settle there. The town is named after Baius, owner of a Roman villa in the vicinity of present-day Baena.

Its current location is due to the Moorish era, from which part of the castle and network of narrow streets in the Almedina neighbourhood have been preserved. In 1241, Baena was handed over to Ferdinand III and was repopulated by Mudejares, Jews and people from Castile-and-Leon.

Diego Fernández de Córdoba was appointed as the town's lord at the beginning of the 15th century until the seigneurial system was abolished in the 19th century.

There are currently 21,000 inhabitants in the town.

RELIGIOSIDADCAMINOS DE EMOCIÓN

Hablar de la SEMANA SANTA de Baena, declarada Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional, es hablar de las turbas de judíos -coliblancos y colinegros- y de sus peculiares tambores que redoblan ininterrumpi-damente durante la �esta, de los pasos o esceni�caciones y de las típicas �guras bíblicas.

La �gura del cofrade judío es uno de los rasgos más originales y llamativos. Su marca e indumentaria es tan profunda que ha dejado un sello propio en las distintas cofradías, de modo que se dividen en blancas (de cola blanca) y negras (de cola negra), según el color de las crines de caballo que luzcan los judíos en sus cascos.

Durante la CUARESMA destacan sus misereres con una tradición anterior al siglo XVIII entre otros muchos actos litúrgicos y eventos.Entre otras festividades religiosas baenenses destacan el 18 y 19 de marzo la VÍSPERA Y PROCESIÓN DE SAN JOSÉ, donde la ciudad se convierte en un bullicioso hervidero de tambores haciendo el recorrido por los ‘candelorios’.

En mayo, Baena se llena de color con la EXALTACIÓN DE LA CRUZ, o más tarde (el 16 de julio) con LAS FIESTAS DE LA VIRGEN DEL CARMEN, donde las calles de La Almedina se alfombran con serrín pintado de colores y se engalanan con macetas, �ores y mantones de Manila.

PATRIMONIOCAMINOS DE CULTURA

La cultura en Baena se mani�esta desde la importancia de sus restos arqueológicos (el más signi�cativo, el de TORREPAREDONES), algunos de ellos con más de 3.500 años de antigüedad, hasta los testimonios de un patrimonio muy rico tanto en arquitectura religio-sa como civil.

En la religiosa destacan un conjunto numeroso de emblemáticas iglesias siendo las más representativas la de SANTA MARÍA LA MAYOR y la CONVENTUAL DE MADRE DE DIOS.

Ciudad milenaria, alcanzó gran importancia a partir del siglo VIII cuando se reagrupó aquí gran parte de la población diseminada por los alrededores, dejando el vetusto núcleo ibérico y romano de Iponuba, a 3 km. de distancia. Su nombre procede de Baius, quien fuera propietario de una ‘villae’ romana que hubo en los alrede-dores de la actual Baena.

Su ubicación actual se debe a la época musulmana, de la que aún conserva parte de su castillo y del entramado de las calles de La Almedina. En el año 1241, Baena se entregó al rey Fernando III y se repobló con una comuni-dad de castellano-leoneses, mudéjares y judíos.

A principios del siglo XV se concede en Señorío a Diego Fernández de Córdoba, hasta el siglo XIX con su abolición.

Actualmente cuenta con 19.782 habitantes.

ARTESANÍACAMINOS DE LO AUTÉNTICO

En torno a la Semana Santa, se han creado diferentes talleres que mantienen antiguas tradiciones y artesanalmente realizan, con extraordinaria calidad, el TRAJE Y CASCO DE JUDÍO, así como la fabricación de los especiales TAMBORES que durante la misma se utilizan.

Otros o�cios no tan relacionados con la Semana Santa y que aún se mantienen en la ciudad son la ALFARERÍA, LA ALBARDONERÍA, LA FORJA O LA TALLA en madera, en un proceso de producción manual que viene de�nido por su sentido artístico.

NATURALEZA Y PAISAJESCAMINOS DE LA NATURALEZA

La historia de Baena discurre paralela a la del río Guadajoz, que la atraviesa de suroeste a oeste y cuyo a�uente, el río Marbella, baña el propio núcleo urbano. La particularidad de sus aguas y su suelo han hecho posible la con�guración de un paisaje único. Ejemplo de ello es la CUEVA DEL YESO, a ocho kilómetros de Baena y ubicada en el entorno conocido como Puente de la Maturra. En esta cavidad de 2.562,7 metros, que representa el mayor exponente en cavernamiento de la provincia de Córdoba, viven cinco tipos diferentes de murciéla-gos además de varias especies de gambas únicas en el mundo.

Otros espacios, como las LAGUNAS DE LA QUINTA Y LA DEL RINCÓN DEL MUERTO, ambas incluidas en el Plan Andaluz de Humedales, constituyen dos recursos de gran valor ecológico que sirven para el descanso, alimentación y reproducción de aves migratorias como garzas reales y �amencos rosados.

El EMBALSE DE VADOMOJÓN, por su parte, es uno de los más impor-tantes de la cuenca del Guadalquivir y su puesta en marcha ha permi-tido el desarrollo de actividades náuticas deportivas y de pesca en la zona. Baena cuenta también entre sus tesoros naturales con la VÍA VERDE GUADAJOZ-SUBBÉTICA, que recorre desde el núcleo urbano hasta la vieja estación de tren el antiguo trazado ferroviario y que puede disfrutarse a pie, en bici o a caballo.

La PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUCIÓN es el centro neurálgico de la ciudad donde conviven edi�cios barrocos, como el de la CASA DEL MONTE, con otros actuales como el AYUNTAMIENTO.

El barrio con más tipismo, de origen árabe, es LA ALMEDINA, donde se encuentran los restos del CASTILLO y dos de los símbolos represen-tativos de la ciudad: la copia del LEÓN IBÉRICO y EL CRISMÓN DE BAENA, una cruz visigoda. Sus arcos DE LA CONSOLACIÓN Y OSCURO, restos de la antigua muralla árabe, junto a sus CASAS SEÑORIALES, completan un singular paseo por esta bella ciudad.

GASTRONOMÍACAMINOS DE LOS SENTIDOS

Destaca la excelente calidad de su ACEITE DE OLIVA VIRGEN EXTRA, avalado por la Denominación de Origen Baena (la más antigua de España) y apreciado mundialmente.

El recetario baenense lo componen elementos tradicionales de la cocina andaluza. Cuenta con productos típicos como los de matanza caseros o los quesos, y platos tradicionales como el carnerete, las habas en cazuela o el revoltillo baenense. Todos ellos enriquecidos con los VINOS que se elaboran en la localidad, pertenecientes a la D.O. Montilla-Moriles.

Conviene también degustar su REPOSTERÍA ARTESANA Y LICORES NATURALES.

FIESTAS Y TRADICIONESCAMINOS DE LA TRADICIÓN

Los romeros y caballistas se congregan el día de la ROMERÍA DE LA VIRGEN BLANCA DE LA ALEGRÍA (segundo domingo del mes de junio), entre bailes y cantes populares.

LA FERIA DE LA TAPA COFRADE Y CATA DE VINO precede a la FERIA REAL en la primera semana de octubre. En noviembre, las JORNADAS DEL OLIVAR Y ACEITE DE OLIVA, ofrecen múltiples actividades en torno al oro líquido, entre las que destacan la Ruta de la tapa oro Virgen.

Caminos de Pasión es una ruta cultural para descubrir la tradición de la Semana Santa, el patrimonio, la gastronomía, el folclore, la artesanía, la naturaleza y los paisajes de diez municipios del corazón geográ�co de Andalucía, emblemáticos por su riqueza histórica.
