GRACE RICHARDS [s]. One Grace Richards (Montclair, NJ, 1870 – Sept. 28, 1955) had an interesting career. She was a graduate of the Metropolitan N.Y. College of Music in 1892. After a period in Hawaii, she studied with Sbriglia in Paris and later with Lilli Lehmann in Berlin. “She also became the friend of Johannes Brahms, who coached her in his songs.” In 1905 she toured Europe with Jan Kubelik. She also appeared with Schumann-Heink and other artists, changing her name to Gracia Ricardo, “a practice customary for singers at that time.” Her accompanist here, Florence Wessell, was a noted voice teacher and coach in New York, so whether this is the Grace Richards described above or another singer with the same name I can’t say. “Our” Grace Richards would have been about 55 at the time this recording was made, certainly not an impossibly late age. Perhaps a collector reading this might have the answer? – Internet information.

A Dec. 13, 1911 clipping (probably from Musical America) regarding a Boston Opera Sunday night concert three days earlier mentions the debut of Raoul Ramido [sic], who Boston Opera Impresario Henry Russell supposedly discovered as a Neapolitan fisherman. He sang “Che gelida manina” from La Bohème that evening, the unidentified reviewer advising that “the great things that Mr. Russell predicts for his find may not be far amiss”. Another clipping, from later in the season, advises Mr. Russell’s discovery from Leghorn (spelled “Romita” here) “possesses a wonderful voice which promises to vie with that of Caruso”. However, he appears to have sung only one performance of one role, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana the two seasons (1911-13) he appeared on the Boston Opera roster. VICTOR VERTENEUIL [t]. La Bouverie, Belgium, 1895 – Brussels, 1973. He prepared first as a baritone and then as a tenor, studying with, among others, Melchissedec. From 1925 to 1930 he was principal tenor of the Brussels Théâtre de la Monnaie, creating for that house the principal tenor roles in Turandot and Ariadne auf Naxos. From 1930-35 he was a guest in several French houses, including Marseille, Nice and Toulouse. He also appeared in Monte Carlo, creating there the role of Pedro in d’Albert’s Tiefland. From 1935 to 1942 he was again at la Monnaie where he sang with huge success. In 1942 he retired, working in Brussels as a voice teacher until 1962. His wide repertoire included principal tenor roles in Die Walküre, Aida, Pagliacci, Tosca, Samson, Il Trovatore and many other works, today both familiar and forgotten. Mrs. HENRY J. WOOD [s]. Variously known as Olga Hillman, Olga Michaioff, Olga Ouroussov (or Ourosoff), she was a divorced voice pupil of Henry J. Wood. They wed in 1898. Mrs. Wood (as she was known professionally and privately after her marriage) made her Wigmore Hall (London) debut in 1901, appearing thereafter almost every year until her death in Dec., 1909. Their marriage was described as “of perfect professional and private harmony”. Her accompanist was almost invariably her husband.
