GOD’S WORDS

Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us ―good-night,‖ our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to in-spire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. © Copyright, J. S. LAS PALABRAS DE DIOS

Cada día somos bombardeados por miles de

palabras. Desde el momento en que suena el despertador en la mañana, hasta el último mo-mento del día cuando apagamos el televisor o alguien nos dice ―buenas noches‖, tenemos la vida llena de palabras. Algunas palabras nos

traen noticias que nos deprimen. Algunas palabras nos levantan el espíritu. Muchas de las palabras que es-cuchamos tratan de hacernos comprar algo. Algunas palabras son hirientes. Hoy la Iglesia nos hace prestar atención a la Palabras de Dios. ¿Son las Palabras de Dios igual que las demás –parte de una corriente sin fin de palabras que fluyen por nuestro oídos todos los días? Second Sunday Sharing Envelopes

For many years it has been our parish’s custom to include a

Second Sunday Sharing envelope in the packet of donation envelopes. On the envelope there are several outreach minis-

tries listed as options for the user to choose in designating where their donation should go. On this Second Sunday of the

month, it is an opportunity to review what these different op-

tions are:

Border Ministry - Monies designated for Bor-

der Ministry are used to help the work of vari-

ous groups in our city and diocese which seek to serve the immigrant and refugee, as well

as in service of individual migrants and refu-gees during times of crisis.

PCIC (Pima County Interfaith Council) - This is

an organizing agency which works with various faith communi-ties to empower them to work towards changing unjust struc-

tures as well as to promote involvement in civic affairs.

Share a Lunch - Every 3rd Sunday of the month, our parish provides a simple lunch for the homeless who are served by

Casa Maria (a Catholic Worker House here in Tucson). Dona-tions earmarked for this ministry pay for the food used for the

lunches.

St. Vincent de Paul - These monthly contributions are used to help stock our St. Vincent de Paul Society’s food pantry, pur-

chase bus tickets, give assistance with utilities payments and/

or rent as our parish helps the poor in our vicinity.

Other - Donors may designate some other outreach ministry

for their contribution.

People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate gluten, a

protein in wheat, rye and barley. This is problematic for Catholics who have this disease since in order for the bread

that is used at Mass to be a valid substance for

the sacrament it must include wheat. In recent years, the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Ado-

ration in Clyde, Missouri (the motherhouse of the Benedictine sisters here in Tucson) have

developed a low-gluten host. Many who suffer from this disease have been able to consume

these hosts without any ill effects. These altar

breads have been approved by the Vatican as meeting the standards required for the host to

be considered valid substance for the sacra-ment.

If you suffer from celiac disease, and would like to be

able to received the Body of Christ at communion, please let us know in the Parish Office. If there is a need in our parish,

we will make the necessary arrangements to make reception

of the communion under this species available to you.

Hostias bajas en gluten están disponibles

Las personas que padecen de celiac no toleran el gluten, una

proteína del trigo, centeno y cebada. Esto es problemático para católicos que lo padecen, pues para que el sacramento

sea de una substancia válida debe contener trigo.

Recientemente, las Hermanas Benedictinas de la Perpetua Adoración en Clyde Missouri (la casa

hogar de las hermanas Benedictinas de Tucsón) han desarrollado una hostia baja en gluten.

Muchos que sufren esta enfermedad han podido consumir estas hostias sin problemas

secundarios. Estos panes del altar han sido apro-

mensuales en polaco y con el coro africano se celebrarán en horarios diferentes en julio, agosto, y septiembre. El siguiente

Mass in Polish & Mass with the African Choir

Because of summer vacations and holidays, the regularly

scheduled monthly Masses in Polish and with the African Choir have variations in when they will be celebrated in July, August

and September. The following is the schedule as cur-rently set:

Masses in Polish (3:00 PM - 1st Sunday of the month)

July: No Mass this month August: Mass on August 7th

September: Mass on September 11th (instead of September 4th

due to Labor Day Weekend)

Masses with African Choir (3:00 PM - 3rd Sunday of the month) July: at the 10:00 AM Mass on July 24th

August: Mass on August 21st

September: Mass on September 18th

Etiquette at Mass When your baby cries

Babies and children in our midst are signs of a living Church, and so are a delight to have with us during Mass. However,

when they cry, scream, or jump around they are, at best, a distraction from worship and, at worst, a hindrance to wor-

ship (preventing others from hearing what is being said).

Everyone knows that keeping the young ones quiet is a tough challenge for parents. When they begin to squirm,

most people can tolerate the initial stages of their noise mak-ing. But when the parent does not make a

move to take them out of the worship space, the interruption becomes irritating.

It is good etiquette, and far less distract-

ing, for the parent to get up with the child and move into the vestibule until the child

quiets down.

Los bebés y niños en nuestro entorno son la señal de una Igle-sia viviente, y por lo tanto, nos encanta tenerlos con nosotros

Knights of Columbus to host semi-annual Blood Drive

In collaboration with our parish and the American Red Cross, the Ave Maria Council

#9380 - Knights of Columbus will host the

first of two semi-annual blood drives for 2011 on Sunday July 24th from 8:00 AM through Noon in

Nicholson Hall. Members of the Knights will be at a table in the church vestibule on the preceding weekend (July 16-17) after

most of the Masses to solicit sign-ups. You can also call ahead

of that weekend to make a reservation with Timothy McClaughry @ 228-8875 (Work) or 327-8998 (Home) or our

Parish Office @ 795-1633.

Did you know that one unit of donated blood can help as many as three hospitalized patients of our wonderful South-

ern Arizona communities? Thanks very much for your antici-pated consideration in this worthy cause.

Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is celebrated on July 16th

Hermits lived on Mount Carmel near the Fountain of Elijah (northern Israel) in

the 12th century. They had a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. By the 13th cen-

tury they became known as ―Brothers

of Our Lady of Mount Carmel‖ and later as the ―Carmelites‖. They soon cele-

brated a special Mass and Office in honor of Mary. In 1726 it became a

celebration of the universal Church un-der the title of Our Lady of Mount Car-

mel. For centuries the Carmelites have

seen themselves as specially related to Mary.

There is a tradition (which may not be historical) that on July 16, 1251 Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, a leader of the

Carmelites then living in Aylesford, England, and gave him a scapular. (The image of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel holding the

scapular is more formally called Our Lady of the Scapular.) A

century and a quarter after the apparition to St. Simon Stock, the Carmelite Order began to celebrate

their patroness’ feast on this date.

The brown scapular symbolizes Mary’s special protection of the Carmelite Order

and calls the wearers to consecrate them-selves to her in a special way. The scapu-

lar reminds us of the gospel call to prayer

and penance - a call that Mary models in a splendid way.

Saturday (July 16th) will be the Mass of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

El 16 de Julio se Celebra la Festividad de Nuestra Señora del Carmen

En el siglo 12, los hermitaños vivían en el Monte Carmelo cerca de la

Fuente de Elías (parte norte de Is-rael). Ellos tenían una capilla dedi-

cada a Nuestra Señora. Para el siglo

13, ellos llegaron a conocerse como ―Hermanos de Nuestra Señora del

Monte Carmelo‖ y después, como los ―Carmelitas‖. Pronto ellos celebraron

una Misa especial y un oficio en honor de María. En 1726, se convir-

tió en una festividad de la Iglesia uni-

versal bajo el título de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo. Por siglos los Carmelitas se han considerado especialmente

relacionados con María.

Existe una tradición (que pudiera no ser histórica) que el 16 de Julio de 1251 María se le apareció a San Simón Stock,

un líder de los Carmelitas que entonces vivía en Aylesford, Inglaterra, y le dió un escapulario. (La imágen de Nuestra

Señora del Carmen sosteniendo un escapulario, se llama más

Orden de los Carmelitas empezó a festejar el santo de su patrona en esta fecha.

El escapulario café simboliza la protección especial de

timiento — un llamado que María muestra en forma esplé-ndida.
