In celebration of the 2011 publication of the first-ever Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the

Environment, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) is proud to present this

gallery of images showcasing the island’s rich biodiversity & natural splendor.

Considered one of the most eco-diverse countries in the world, the Dominican Republic offers its guests an array of exotic

wildlife, rare plants and stunning habitats all within an area of under 49,000 square kilometers. From prehistoric

iguanas lazing in the sun to the flash of tiny fireflies in the Caribbean night; from coral reefs teeming with brightly-colored tropical fish to nesting parakeets in orchid-covered woodlands on volcanic mountains, the Dominican Republic presents a wealth of experiences for the eco-traveler.

Recognizing the importance of protecting this precious heritage, the Dominican Republic has made the establishment of protected nature reserves, both on land and at sea, a national priority. Whether it’s marveling Jaragua Park’s flamingoes, discovering the ancient bat-caves of Los Haitises National Park, or whale watching off the coast of Samana, the. Dominican Republic invites you to come and enjoy this incredible land.

The Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment is yet another GFDD’s initiative that aspires to foster education and awareness on important contemporary issues. It seeks to promote understanding, respect, care, sustainable use and protection of the environment as well as warn about the dangers of its contamination and ill use.

Know as sea lilies or feather stars, crinoids are a class of marine invertebrates named for their external appearance. Over 540 crinoid species have been described worldwide, most of which are feathery or spiny and are characterized by a mouth on the top surface surrounded by feeding arms.
