LITURGY 408.847.5151 OR [email protected]

I serve on our parish RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) team and I want to share the joy and excitement of this process with you. Becoming Catholic, the catechumenate process, means falling in love with Jesus Christ through our Catholic faith. It’s not something we do by studying or reading textbooks or attending meetings from September until Easter. Try to remember falling in love with your significant other (SO). It took some time. It took some relationship-building. That’s what the catechumenate process should be like. Very often the Rite Book (our guide to the process) mentions that time is required: time to reflect, time to experience, time to explore. The Rite Book also describes the responsibilities of the whole Catholic family in helping the process. Did your family help and support the blossoming relationship with your SO? Did your future in-laws? Were the new couple included in both families’ activities so you each could see and feel how the family operated? That’s what we are called to as we facilitate this blossoming love of Christ. We so far have about 12 adult inquirers. They each need a “Mass Buddy” someone to connect with at Mass so they have an anchor. You have a chance to help someone fall in love with Jesus Christ through our Catholic faith! Watch out! You might rekindle your own love affair with Christ. You might form a deep friendship with your inquirer! This is my hope and prayer—that you do just that. Contact me or Barbara Zarka or Hilda Porcella if you are interested in taking up this challenge.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 14, 2016 ST. MARY SCHOOL OFFICE: 408.842.2827 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION:

408.847.2652

It is AUGUST!!!! Have you registered your children for faith formation classes?? Our catechetical year will begin on Sunday,

September 18th and Monday, September 19th!! Registration forms are available in the Religious Education Office and also the Parish Office. Come in this week and register your child!!! We want to be sure we order enough books for this year. We look forward to having your children return!! Please call our office for further information. Our number is 408.847.2652.

HELP....HELP... HELP!!! As lives go.... and changes come into our lives, the desire to continue as a catechist sometimes has to come to an end... And so it is with 4 catechists this coming year. I am extremely grateful for their dedication and commitment to the children in this ministry. But with their leaving, this leaves us without 4 catechists for the year. Please pray for the wisdom, to hear God's call and answer "YES!" to sharing your faith with our children in the Parish. Please call Barbara in the Religious Education Office at 408.847.2652.

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL SMS FACULTY, STAFF AND FAMILIES

The 2016-2017 school year begins this Thursday, August 18th, 2016. The school grounds are looking great and we are ready for an exciting and stimulating year! A huge thank you to Daniel and Yvonne Hernandez and their crew of parents and friends who worked very hard on Saturday to spruce up the school for our first day. We also need to thank our new Facilities Manager, Lawrence Garibaldi, for his tireless efforts all summer to ensure that everything is ready for the first day of school. It has been a real team effort and one that is very appreciated by all of us at St. Mary School. Just as a reminder as school begins that the first row of parking spaces is transformed into a “Drop Off” lane only for students. At 8:15am when the bell rings, those rows open up for parking for those attending morning mass and for our school families. Again this year, two school families have “purchased” the privilege of parking in the marked spots. Thank you for your cooperation with these procedures and for helping to keep our children safe.

WEEKEND LITURGY QUESTIONS/COMMENTS AUGUST 14, 2016

1. The Gospel has powerful images of fire and division. Jesus is going to set the earth on fire. We describe a person with passion or enthusiasm as being “on fire”.

2. The Holy Spirit is often depicted as a flame. As Catholics we are sealed with the Holy Spirit and called to be on fire for the Lord.

3. What sets you on fire? How will your love for God be visible to your children? How do you keep the flame of faith alive in yourself?

A FUN WELCOME TO NEW ST. MARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

On Saturday, August 6th, the Mother’s Guild Board hosted a welcome play date for our new 2016-2017 students. It was a great time for the children and the parents to get to know each other and share in some fun and play. Thank you to the Mother’s Guild for hosting this event and we welcome all of you to St, Mary School and look forward to seeing you on August 18th!!

† The Priests of the Parish celebrate Sunday Eucharist for the intentions of all the Parish. Please pray for the ill of the Parish and for the recently deceased.

What is RCIA all about??? The Catechumenate Process (the formal name) is a process of prayer, learning, and

discovery. It is a gathering of adults who are asking questions about God and faith. It is an opportunity to enrich one's spiritual life by becoming a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church. If you are in need of the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist), there will be an Information Night on Monday, August 22nd at 7:00pm in the Common Room of St. Francis Center on Church St. Please call Barbara in the Religious Education Office at 408.847.2652 for more information.
