    Overview

Carbon materials have high strengthand stiffness potential as well ashigh thermal and chemical stability

in inert environments. Thesematerials must, however, beprotected with coatings and/or

surface sealants when used in anoxidizing environment.

    State of the art

Carbon-carbon (CC) materials are ageneric class of composites similar

to the graphite/epoxy family ofpolymer matrix composites.

These materials can be made in awide variety of forms, from one-dimensional to n-dimensional, using

unidirectional tows, tapes, or wovencloth. Because of their multiformit

The development of CC materialsbegan in 1958 and was nurtured

under the US Air Force space planeprogram, Dyna-Soar and NASA'sApollo projects. It was not until theSpace Shuttle Program that CC

    material systems were intensivelyresearched.

The criteria that led to the selection

    1) maintenance of reproduciblestrength levels at 1650C (3002F)

    2) sufficient stiffness to resist flightloads and large thermal gradients

    3) low coefficient of thermal expansion

    to minimize induced thermalstresses

    4) oxidation resistance sufficient to

    limit strength reduction

    Mercedes-Benz CL55 AMGF1

The Mercedes-Benz CL 55 AMG F1Limited Edition is the world's firstroadgoing automobile equipped with an

ultra-high-performance ceramic brakingsystem. The engineers atDaimlerChrysler AG and Mercedes-AMG

GmbH developed internally ventilatedbrake discs made from fiber-reinforcedceramics for this unique high-performance coupe. The use of ceramic

brakes in the CL was part of a pilot
