AbstractChinese Culture is profound and has a long history. The eating habits and
literatures are the elementary components of Chinese culture. Though not a
monograph specialized in food culture, A dream of Red Mansions is an outstanding
literature works with a large number of text descriptions on China’s food culture, and
which makes it even precious. The works well integrated food culture into the story
for recording comprehensive aspects of China’s food culture, and meanwhile,
enriching the characters of the novel via their food preferences. The essay attempts to
apply food culture from A dream of Red Mansions in Chinese language teaching for
foreigners, and focuses on the course design for advanced learners on the subject.
The essay describes the current teaching situation of Chinese language for
foreigners at the beginning, introducing the reason of selecting the topic, reviews
relevant researches on this problem, and points out the importance and necessity of
culture, and food culture especially, in Chinese language teaching for foreigners. The
second part is the overview on food culture from the novel, which analyzes the food
features in the novel in details and lists culture contents including good-health
preservation, food etiquette and custom, and tea and wine culture. The third part is the
strategy of course designs on food culture course based on the novel. Course design
principles and applicable class type are presented. The fourth part demonstrates
course-teaching examples on the subject and provides course design examples on
special lectures and related teaching materials.
The innovation of this thesis is that taking A Dream of Red Mansions as the
specific object of TCSL culture teaching, listing the main contents and giving the
corresponding teaching suggestions. In addition, this thesis also designs the relevant
samples of the textbook, the teacher’s manual and the teaching plan. This thesis
attempts to explore a new method of Chinese language and culture teaching for
foreigners, hopes to offer valuable suggestions for Chinese language teaching, and
gets feedbacks and opinions.
