I grew up in a large family of 8 children. My oldest brother Sharon is someone I havealways looked up to. He is bright, thoughtful, gifted and loves the Lord. I learned aremarkable lesson from one of his numerous acts of kindness a few years ago. When Ivisited my home ward in Cokeville Wyoming many years after I had moved away, thehigh priests group leader told a story about my brother I have never forgotten.Cokevile is a tiny town of 500 and we often traveled to the “much larger” town ofMontpelier, Idaho (1500) to do our shopping and get needed supplies. There was aconstant flow of traffic to and from the hometown. During one of his trips, the mantelling the story was traveling from Montpelier and saw a man who was hitch hikingalong the main road. The man was incredibly dirty, was wearing torn and wornclothing, had a straggly beard, and was missing most of his front teeth. To the worldhe was repulsive and people drove around him to avoid him. The story tellermentioned that the man’s appearance almost frightened him he was so ugly. Thenext day was Sunday and the story teller was astounded when he saw that sameman show up to Church, dressed in one of my brother’s suits, clean shaven andbathed, and having been fed a couple of wonderful meals. The worn old man wastearful as he told of how he had been treated with much kindness, respect and, afterChurch, sent on his way with a nice suit, a full stomach and some spending money.

The high priest group leader also had tears in his eyes as he recounted the story andmade this statement, “Isn’t that just like Sharon Dayton— to do a Christ-like act thatnone of us would have thought to do.” What a remarkable thing— to have someonesay, “Isn’t that just like him” referring to a remarkable and loving act of kindness forsomeone unfortunate. Wouldn’t all of us love to have people say about us, “Isn’tthat just like him!” What my brother was demonstrating was what it means to be atrue disciple of Christ

The word “disciple” comes from the Latin “discipulus” which means “a pupil of.” A

true disciple of Christ is someone who has learned to believe in the doctrine of Christand follow Him. Becoming a disciple of the Master means that at some point in yourife, you have to make a conscious decision that Christ will become the central figure

n your life! Obviously there have been true disciples of Christ in every dispensation. What are the characteristics of a true disciple of the Savior? They include believing inthe true doctrine of Christ (Ether 4:11), obeying the principles of the gospel (John8:31), having love one to another (John 13:34-35), bringing forth works of righteousness(John 15:4-8), accepting the message of and helping in the work of preaching thegospel (D&C 84?87-91), mourning and bearing one another’s burdens and being a

witness of Him at all times (Mosiah 18:8-19), serving him and keeping Hiscommandments. Those who serve Him faithfully and are true disciples or Christiansare promised that they will be the redeemed of God, be numbered among those inthe 1st resurrection, and have eternal life.

But it is not enough to be a casual disciple. The Lord has told us that if we areukewarm in our discipleship he will spew us out of his mouth. To inherit the greatblessings promised, we need to be valiant in our testimony of Christ. (D&C 76:51-70,79). Examples of valiant discipleship might be serving the poor and disadvantaged

(like my brother Sharon), magnifying our callings in the Church, going beyond themark  — doing more than is required of us, l iving an exemplary life of kindness, consideration and thoughtfulness, volunteering to help bless others on an ongoingbasis, and going about “doing much good”— like the Savior without expectation ofreward. In the mission field, the consecrated missionary is the best example of adisciple being valiant. They are obedient, they work to the limits of their physicalability every day, they don’t waste time, they are loving and kind, they forget theirown needs while blessing others, they testify with power and authority, they are non-udgmental and forgiving, they take seriously the injunction to serve with their heart, might, mind and strength.

My prayer is that as El Faro missionaries every single one of you will read thismessage and pay heed to it. It is my greatest wish to see our beloved missionarieshave lives of happiness as they become true disciples of the Master. In so doing theywill inherit all that our Father has. Remember, “Yo soy discípulo porque me disciplino.”

    Con deseos de ser disciplinado,

    Presidente Merril T Dayton

    Boldness vs Fearfulness

    Message From Hermana Dayton

1 de Mayo de 2016El larín de El Faro

Boldness is confidence that what I have to say or do is true, right and just. Boldnessthe fearless courage to carry out the work of the Lord and do what He has calleds to do. It is often the outward evidence of inward courage.

There are many examples in the scriptures of those who were bold. Joshua was

ommanded to be of good courage...to be bold in facing death in battle, to speakruth and to do great things for the Lord. The sons of Mosiah were fearless testifiers of

Christ. The Apostle Paul was bold in testifying truth. He faced much persecution, yetad the assurance that he was doing the work of the Lord. The Savior was certainlyold in speaking the truth to all and in courageously atoning for the sins of all

    mankind.

President Monson has assured each of us that, "whom the Lord calls, the Lordualifies". We can each take courage in knowing that we have been called and set

part to do the Lord's work in bringing others to Christ. One of the ways we areualified is by having the spirit with us as we share the Gospel on the streets inpain. To do this effectively, it requires that we develop an attitude of boldness toring others to Christ. We must overcome the fear of offending others, the fear of thegativity we experience around us and the fear of rejection. In 2 Timothy 1:7-8 we

ead, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of aound mind. Be not therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord....but be thouartaker of the afflictions of the Gospel according to the power of God."

There is a story told of a man who was diagnosed with cancer and only had a fewmonths to live. This man heard that there was a burglar trapped in a store and hemmediately volunteered to go in to apprehend the burglar. He thought that if heied in the process, he would leave this life viewed as a hero. The burglar was soverwhelmed by this man's boldness that he surrendered. This brave man continued

o volunteer for other acts of bravery over the next several months and astonished

    veryone by his boldness.

We can apply boldness in missionary work by:

--Boldly and humbly speaking the truths of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.--Boldly supporting others when they speak what is true.--Being willing to stand alone when faced with difficult situations.--Boldly and kindly discussing disobedience of a companion or missionary

    in your area.

--Walking away from others who are doing foolish or harmful things.--Each morning as you leave your piso, look in the mirror and say, "I fear noman!"

We are grateful for your examples of boldness as you testify of Jesus Christ. Younspire us and lift our souls on a regular basis. We will continue to pray for you daily asou fearlessly bring others to the Savior.

So this last week has been agreat one especially with the

baptism with Esther. So thisgreat miracle started a fewweeks ago when we set thefecha with her. As we invitedher to get baptized she wasvery excited but nervous thatthings wouldn't work out. So Iinvited her to pray so that shecould know and so that Godcould help her in the comingweeks. One week before her

baptism she told us that shegot a answer from God sayingthat no matter what she isgetting baptized on the 23.We just started to pray andfast so that her desire will befulfilled. So this last Saturdayeverything went fantastic!!!!!We had a member go andpick her and when she cameto the church we started the

service. There was 80 peoplethere at her service. It kinda

helped because we had aactivity after but it was insane. She also got up to bare hertestimony and it was sostrong!!!!! In it was such a greatend to a fantastic week.

The week flew by and nowit's transfer day. But the miraclewas that Angela made it toher baptism and after the

hymn and prayer everythingwent smoothly, then she cameon Sunday to be confirmed. And now the church onceagain has her records in theirfiles to never be lost again Ihope. And she has already setup some visits with some of herfriends to meet with us sothings are picking up little bylittle.

Our miracle this week isabsolutely the baptism ofZaldy. His girlfriend who lives

in Canada told him to searchfor the church here in Spain,so he checked the internetand found a church inBadalona to go to. He got upand traveled an hour to go tochurch for two weeks in a rowbefore the Elders there foundout he lived in our area andpassed us the reference. Wecalled him and met with himand committed him tobaptism the very first lessonwe had with him. He was sothrilled to find out that therewas a chapel nearby hishome. The day of theprogram he was cryingafterwards and he said, "Idon't know why I am crying, Ijust feel so good." I testified

that the Spirit can have thatkind of effect on people. Hejust smiled and nodded as aresponse.
