Mirabolâncias - The three pillars

I am a brincante educator and I propose a dialog between tradition and *

invention.

Since 1999, I have been researching an array of Brazilian folk manifestations in the arts of dance, music, storytelling and games. The country’s size and socio-cultural makeup provides for a staggering diversity of such manifestations. My contact with the masters of maracatu and caboclinho taught me a valuable * *

lesson: A master does more than re-transmit tradition, s/he is constantly recreating it:

“The Master is an active carrier of tradition who embraces the memory of collective knowledge, but does not restrict himself to repeat it. He re-invents and enhances the heritage that was passed to him. Therefore, he is more than a guardian or preserver of culture - he is a creator and an innovator. He is infused with condensed knowledge - some of it millenniums old - built upon collectively through the centuries, constantly being renewed by other masters like him.”

I have incorporated all of this research into my repertory as a professional musician, storyteller, and educator. Through my contact with children, I couldn’t help but have noticed their spontaneous inventiveness - its naturalness and capability of transforming any of these traditional manifestations into personal expressions.

This experience showed my how invention transforms into tradition, and how tradition lays the groundwork for the next invention.

Cultural manifestations are spontaneously transmitted through family, community and work relationships. They form a diversified and refined patrimony, spanning all forms of artistic expression: song, dance, music, stories, poetry, theater, painting, sculpture, etc.

This cultural patrimony maintains universal, thousand-year-old roots, but in each region and in each people it absorbs a defining characteristic, a peculiar flavor. Throughout history, professional artists have sought out this spontaneous culture, also known as popular culture, as an inspirational source. This search can be defined by three pillars:

ASSIMILATION: To portray, as genuinely as possible, the manifestations in their social and emotional contexts. For this, the artist should transform him-or her-self into a true researcher.

RE-CREATION: After incorporating the aforementioned popular manifestations, the artist performs alterations and transformations, thus giving a new face to the traditional. In the process of re-creation, however, the inspirational origin is always clear.

• Body Percussion, rhythmic games using hands, cups games, elastic, ping-pong balls and other objects

INVENTION: When assimilation turns organic and re-creation has become a daily process, the artist finds him-or her-self face in the realm of invention. That’s when surprising solutions arise, giving origin to a third pillar, where all the elements communicate with one another.

Upon delving into cultural tradition, we propose to study these three pillars: the master transmitting to his apprentices, the educator teaching his students, and the children in the invention of their daily lives.

Estêvão Marques The San Francisco International Orff Course

1. El niño, el juego y la tradición Se trata de un encuentro con el mundo infantil de la cultura popular brasileña.

Canciones, danzas y ritmos que son tocados en fiestas se reinventan en el aula. 

Vamos a explorar la percusión brasileña con cucharas musicales, juegos, percusión

corporal, bailes y melodías que cuentan historias.  La inspiración para crear nuevas

formas de enseñanza musical va a surgir de una manera divertida al jugar con la

tradición popular.

1.1. Los tres pilares.

“Brincante" es el que juega con los conocimientos y propone un diálogo entre tradición

e invención.

He estado investigando una variedad de manifestaciones populares brasileñas en las

artes de la danza, la música, la narración de cuentos y los juegos. La gran composición

sociocultural del país proporcionan una asombrosa diversidad de manifestaciones. Mi

contacto con maestros antiguos de los pequeños pueblos me enseñaron una valiosa

lección: un maestro hace más que retransmitir la tradición, la está recreando

constantemente:

“El Maestro es un portador activo de tradición que abraza la memoria del

conocimiento colectivo, pero no se limita a repetirlo. Reinventa y mejora la herencia

que le fue transmitida. Por lo tanto, él es más que un guardián o conservador de la

cultura: es un creador e innovador. Está infundido con conocimiento condensado,

algunos de ellos milenarios, construidos colectivamente a través de los siglos, siendo

constantemente renovado por otros maestros como él ".

He incorporado toda esta investigación en mi repertorio como músico profesional y

educador. A través de mi contacto con los niños, pude notar su espontánea naturalidad

y capacidad de transformar cualquiera de estas manifestaciones tradicionales en

expresiones personales.

Esta experiencia me mostró cómo la invención se transforma en tradición, y cómo la

tradición se convierte en la base para la próxima invención.

Las manifestaciones culturales se transmiten espontáneamente a través de las

relaciones familiares, comunitarias y laborales. Forman un patrimonio diversificado y

refinado, que abarca todas las formas de expresión artística: canción, danza, música,

cuentos, poesía, teatro, pintura, escultura, etc.

Este patrimonio cultural mantiene raíces universales milenarias, pero en cada región y

cada pueblo absorbe una característica, un sabor peculiar. A lo largo de la historia, los

artistas profesionales han buscado esta cultura espontánea, también conocida como

cultura popular, como fuente de inspiración. Esta búsqueda se puede definir mediante

tres pilares:

- 1. Asimilación: retratar, de la manera más genuina posible, las manifestaciones

en su contexto social. Para esto, el artista debe transformarse a sí mismo en un

verdadero investigador.

- 2. Recreación: después de incorporar las manifestaciones populares, el artista

realiza alteraciones y transformaciones, dando así una nueva cara a lo

tradicional. En el proceso de recreación, sin embargo, el origen inspirador

siempre es claro.

- 3. Invención: cuando la asimilación se vuelve orgánica y la recreación se ha

convertido en un proceso diario, el artista se encuentra en el reino de la

invención. Es entonces cuando surgen soluciones sorprendentes, que dan origen

a este tercer pilar, donde todos los elementos se comunican.

Al profundizar en la tradición cultural, proponemos estudiar estos tres pilares: el

maestro transmitiendo a sus aprendices, el educador enseñando a sus alumnos y los

niños en la invención de sus vidas cotidianas.

2. El cuerpo musical Esta experiencia musical con la tradición esta vinculada al cuerpo. La asociación de los

sonidos al movimiento corporal ayuda a multiplicar las sensaciones y a conectar el

hecho audible con la totalidad del ser. Los niños asimilan los conceptos de espacio y

tiempo a través de sus cuerpos. Al reafirmar sus percepciones a través del

movimiento, traduciendo sonidos y ritmos corporales, los niños no solo agudizan su

escucha, sino que también contribuyen para su desarrollo cognitivo, emocional, motor,

sensorial, social y creativo.

Toda teoría busca la tierra fértil de un cuerpo activo.

Graduado en Música, en la Facultad de Sao Paulo, Brasil, Investigador del folclore y la cultura popular brasileña. Profesor en el Curso Internacional The San Francisco Orff Course en EEUU. Ha impartido talleres alrededor del mundo, Turquía, Colombia, Uruguay, Holanda, Portugal, Hong Kong, Italia, Tailandia, Finlandia, Noruega, Taiwan, España, Argentina y por todo Brasil.

Hizo la dirección del programa de radio “Muitas coisas poucas palavras, a arte de ensinar e aprender” de Francisco Marques (Chico dos Bonecos).

Investigador de las cucharas percusivas alrededor del mundo y autor de “Colherim” (un libro que enseña a tocar ritmos brasileños convirtiendo la cuchara en un instrumento de percusión). Director del curso online: Baile do Colherim

Autor del libro “Brasil for Children” (libro+CD con 30 canciones) y autor de la colección “Historias que cantam” (Cuentos cantados) ganhadora del premio del Departamento de Educación del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad de Sao Paulo. Coautor de los nueve libros “Brincadeiras e Brincadeirinhas Musicais Palavra Cantada”, obteniedo el reconocimiento por sus ideas inovadoras en el mundo de la educación artística.

Miembro del grupo infantil “Grupo TRIII”. Como músico ha tocado con el grupo infantil “Palavra Cantada”, Chico César, Antonio Nobrega y con el grupo de percusión corporal Barbatuques.

Desde el año 2001 ha sido profesor del “Instituto Brincante” de Sao Paulo y de diversos colegios de la misma ciudad.
