WHAT ARE MAGNETOELECTRIC MATERIALS?
The magnetoelectric materials, when properly poled and magnetized, produce a electric field when applying a magnetic field, or change their magnetic properties when applying a electric field.
The magnetoelectric materials can be either single-phase or composites.
In the single phase materials the magnetic coupling occurs within the atomic structure of the single phase (Bi5Ti3Fe1O15).
The composites are formed by a piezoelectric (BaTiO3, PZT) phase and a magnetostrictive phase (CoFe2O4). The coupling between both phases is through the mechanical strains. Their microstructure and magnetoelectric properties are greatly determined by the phases proportions, the particle mean size andshape, the particle size distribution and the sinterization temperature.

POTENCIAL APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETOELECTRIC MATERIALS
•Multiple-state memory elements
•Electric-field-controlled ferromagnetic resonance devices
•Transducer with magnetically-modulated piezoelectricity.
•The ability to couple with either the magnetic or the electric polarization offers an extra degree of freedom in the design of conventional actuators, transducer and store devices.

MAGNETOELECTRIC EFFECT: THEORY OF MEASUREMENT

SAMPLE PREPARATION
Barium titanate is a piezoelectric material bellow the Tc=130°C. It has a centrosymmetric perovskite cubic structure above TC and a tetragonal non-centrosymmetric bellow TC.The longitudinal strain piezoelectric coefficient is 1.9x10-8
cm/V.
Cobalt ferrite is a magnetostrictive material bellow TC=520°C. It has a spinel cubic structure. The magnetostriction constant is λ=∆l/l=-110.10-6
The powders of BaTiO3 and CoFe2O4 were mixed in different proportions and pressed in disk shape 1.2 cm in diameter and 0.12 in thickness. The disk samples were sinterized, electrically poled at 150°C during 1 hour in a electric field of17kV/cm and magnetized with a 16 kOe magnetic field. The disk faces were silvered for ohmic contacts.
