Laboratory of Microbiology
Institute of General and Experimental Biology, MAS
Landlocked
High altitude (~1580m)
The temperature fluctuates
throughout the year: - 40℃ to 38℃
Mongolia has unique geography, environment and climate
condition which are resulted in unique diversity of plants and
animals containing many species endemic to Mongolia. Thus
we expect unique diversity and novel taxa of microorganisms
in Mongolia as well as microbes of economically importance.
Institute of General and Experimental Biology, MAS
The Institute of Biology established in
1965 was merged with the Institute
of Botany in 2015 and was named
thereafter as the Institute of General
and Experimental Biology (IGEB).
Mission: Study of the biological
resources and biodiversity of
Mongolian ecosystems,
development of scientific
justification for conservation and
sustainable use of bio-resources and
application of research results into
practice to achieve the
sustainability.

Mongolia-Japan joint research project (2006-2017) titled
“Taxonomic and Ecological Studies of Microorganisms in
Mongolia and the Utilization” implemented successfully. The Final
Meeting of the Joint Research Project was held on Aug 08, 2016
in Ulaanbaatar.
MAS of Mongolia and NITE of Japan signed MOU and PA on Joint
Research Program on “Transfer, Utilization and Benefit-Sharing of
Microbial Resources” (2017-2022) on March 31, 2017.

One researcher of the
laboratory participated in
“The 8th international
training course on
microbial taxonomy” held
for 6 weeks in Korean
Collection for Type
Cultures (KCTC), Korea.
A proposal of two novel species of the genus Phyllobacterium is
under preparation. The two strains were deposited in KCTC.
